The Tydeman Centre - Resourced provision for Language Disorder/Autism/Dyslexia

The Malling School incorporates the Tydeman Centre, offering specialist provision for pupils with language and communication needs.

Admissions are managed by the Local Authority but parents and carers are very welcome to ring for a visit or to attend one of our Open Days.

Children must have a statement of special educational needs or Education, Health and Care Plan for one of the following: 

  • a speech or language disorder
  • a high functioning autistic spectrum disorder
  • significant specific learning difficulties of a dyslexic nature

There should be no primary behavioural need.  Pupils must be capable of fully participating in the Centre’s inclusion programme.

Pupils admitted in Year 7 are taught in the Centre for the majority of their lessons.   They follow a structured inclusion programme into the main school which adds to the harmonious mix and supportive atmosphere.  A team of trained assistants is on hand to support pupils.

Pupils follow the National Curriculum, differentiated to meet their needs and with an emphasis on multi-sensory approaches.  All pupils study for GCSEs or their equivalent.  We have high expectations and an excellent record of pupil achievement.

We attribute much of our success to a very finely tuned tutorial system whereby each specialist teacher has responsibility for a ‘family group’ of about ten children.  They design a personalised learning programme of tutorials which are scheduled to occur regularly throughout the timetable.  The tutor assumes responsibility for the pastoral welfare of their group and for liaison with parents, staff and other professionals.

Vocational pathways

The Vocational pathway is designed to offer as personalised a programme of study as we are able to offer.

Currently pupils are taking a variety of pathways, choices this year include BTEC PE, Hair and Beauty, Art and Hospitality. These choices are combined with the Work skills programme which currently includes a Level 1 qualification in Personal and Social Development and a Level 2 qualification in Employability Skills.

Pupils will be offered the chance to develop their employability skills with a programme of work experience and/or a Land Based Studies which they will attend one or two days a week.

The course this year includes a First Aid qualification and a chance to develop leadership skills through the Drive to Ensure programme. Pupils are actively encouraged to take part in the Tydeman buddying scheme, developing their social and communication skills . Pupils will also take part in a number of extra -curricular activities designed to complement the work skills programme.

If grade C’s examination grades have not been obtained in English and Maths then a level 2 qualification will be taken in functional Maths and English skills.
