Course Description:
This is a nationally recognised qualification that prepares students for work in the hairdressing and beauty
industry. The course is made up on five mandatory units and a minimum of four optional units to achieve the
VTCT VRQ Level 2 Certificate in Hairdressing and Beauty.
 
The units are:
Promote products and services to clients in a salon
Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector
The art of dressing hair
Applying make-up
Follow health and safety practice in the salon
Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp
The art of colouring hair
Plaiting and twisting hair
Provide basic manicure treatment
Nail art application
 
How will students learn?
Initially you will develop your practical skills on a training head, then using each other progressing onto models,
as your skills improve with tutor supervision you will provide treatments for fee paying clients. Underpinning
knowledge will be delivered through different activities including lectures, group discussion and independent
research.
 
How will the course be assessed?
You will be assessed internally through assignments, oral questioning, continuous assessment or your practical
work, externally set and marked examinations and external moderation.
 
Education Pathways after Year 11:
Successful completion of the level 2 certificate could lead onto another level 2 course, a level 3 course or
employment in the hairdressing and beauty industry or other related areas. Alternatively, students may
choose to progress to an apprenticeship providing they find appropriate employment in a salon.
