At the Malling School the curriculum is designed to be inclusive of all pupils, and take account of their starting points. Teachers have high expectations of the pupils, and work is set to enable pupils to make rapid progress towards targets, with appropriate support and guidance.

Numeracy and Literacy skills are taught throughout subjects, and pupils are supported to apply their skills in a range of different scenarios.

The curriculum is broken into three Key Stages:

Key Stage 3
Years 7, 8 and 9

Key Stage 4
Years 10 and 11

Key Stage 5
Years 12 and 13

Key Stage 3

In Years 7, 8 and 9 pupils study the National Curriculum for England. As such we offer a curriculum which is broadly balanced, which promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils and prepares pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.

Pupils study core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science.

Pupils also study the Foundation Subjects of Art and Design, Design and Technology, Languages (French, Spanish and Latin dependent upon setting), Geography, History, Music, Drama and Physical Education.

Pupils also study a programme in tutor time and Ethics which encompasses Citizenship, Religious Education and Sex and Relationships Education.

All pupils complete the Accelerated Reader Programme, both within tutor time and within English lessons.

Key Stage 4

In Years 10 and 11 all pupils study English, Mathematics, Sciences and General Studies as their core curriculum and make option choices from a range of other subjects.

All pupils continue to study the Accelerated Reader Programme, both within tutor time and in English lessons.

All courses chosen by pupils will lead to a recognised qualification, either as a GCSE or a Level 1 or Level 2 Btec, or a VTCT Level 2. These courses are matched to the pupils on the course each year, enabling the teacher to accurately set appropriate work for the pupils on the course.

We offer the International Baccalaureate Careers Programme. This combines both a high value vocational qualification with academic subjects. Pupils also complete a core programme, which complements the skills pupils are learning in lessons, and develops independence and creativity. This programme is internationally recognised and is relevant to pupils wishing to enter work directly after Year 13 and those that are looking to university places.

Pupils can also choose to study a bespoke vocational programme, in which their studies in school are complemented by a work experience placement and continuing mathematics and English studies.

We also offer a range of AS and A Level qualifications in conjunction with Holmesdale Technology College.

All courses are subject to pupils attaining entrance criteria, which is available on request from the Key Stage 5 Raising Standards Leader.
