Female Physicists

Girls from the Year 10 Grammar stream took part in a Physics workshop run by Liz Hutchins from the Institute of Physics.

For more than 25 years only around 20% of pupils progressing on to A-level physics have been girls, despite equal success being shared between the genders in GCSE physics and science.  The Malling School Science department is aiming to redress this balance.

Pupils discussed stereotyping and careers in physics before carrying out practical activities and relating them to the real world.

The girls particularly enjoyed making straw whistles, making hydrogel beads disappear and looking at centripetal force.
