Trudy Dean ‘You Decide'

12279020_633984606739388_2787942113379598835_nOn Saturday 21st November, the Unit Radio team participated in the Trudy Dean ‘You Decide Event’ hosted by Kent County Council at The Malling School. The team presented their bid with the hopes of raising extra funds for the purchase of new equipment to help in the production of their future radio shows, plays and interviews.

In the Dragon’s Den style format of the fundraiser, groups were allowed just three minutes to stand up and present their case for funding; the audience then voted for their favourite cause. For Unit Radio, Tone Blakesley, Bailey Abson and Conner Seales took to the floor and wowed the audience telling their own stories of how Unit Radio has helped them become the confident students they are today. Their tales were both insightful and meaningfully and clearly appealed to the audience, as they won the most votes for any participating group. It was great to see this project, initiated and run for many years by teacher Mr Whitehead, receiving such recognition and acclaim.

As Bailey said about the event, “I enjoyed getting up in costume with my bros, and being able to do what I do best and perform our speech rather than just read it. I feel this was a big reason why we came first, because with our confidence and performing skills we engaged and captured their hearts. The feeling of being announced in first place was astounding”.

Indeed, the students put on a stunning and heart-felt performance and it was great to see them supported by so many friends and family members. Even past Unit Radio club members came to cheer them along too. With the funding now in the bag, we can no doubt expect to see more amazingly edited and high-quality Unit Radio shows in the future.
