Tonbridge and Malling MP Tom Tugendhat visits TMS

The visit had been organised as part of the East Malling secondary’s election campaign in which pupils are chosen to represent the national parties, leading to a poll on General Election day, Thursday June 8.

Mr Tugendhat first took part in a question and answer session with members of the school Debating Society and then faced the whole school in a special assembly where pupils of all parties were given the opportunity to quiz him.

At the end of the session, the MP told a hushed hall: ‘It is so important you take part in the democratic conversation.  I work for you so even if you do not vote for me, write to me and be a part of democracy.’

Headteacher Mr Roberts said: “This was a great opportunity for our students. It is important that they learn to understand the responsibilities they have as citizens of this country. It was a fantastic chance to ask questions of their MP and I was very proud that they asked mature and informed questions. We were delighted to welcome Mr Tugendhat to our school.”

Students involved in the election campaign then enjoyed an informal lunch with the MP. Year 9 student Emma Stone said: “Meeting the MP gives a different insight to what is going on rather than just reading about it.”

The event was organised by literacy coordinator Jonathan Cass, who said: ‘This was a great, aspirational event which I hope will encourage students to play an active part in society.”
