The Panathlon is back!

Inspired by the London 2012 Paralympics, The Panathlon Challenge  multi-sports events for young disabled people return to Kent once again this month (May), with over  250 young disabled people taking part from 20 Kent special schools in 5 different sports, boccia, polybat, table cricket, new-age kurling and athletics.   The West Kent heats, for special schools from Dartford, Malling, Tonbridge and Maidstone, will run at The Malling School in East Malling on Thursday 2 May, with specially trained Young Sports Leaders, students from the school, working as stewards and ensuring fair play and that everything runs smoothly.  Panathlon delivered the Panathlon Officials Training across the 3 regions of Kent. They trained 10 leaders at The Malling School, all of whom will officiate in the Kent First Round Regionals at the beginning of May.

Head of Sport at The Malling School, James Barnes, said:  “The Panathlon is a tremendous opportunity for our young Sports Leaders to make a contribution to sport for all.  In school they are constantly working on their own sports skills and pushing themselves to the limit of their abilities.  As Panathlon stewards they get to share their passion for sport with those less fortunate than themselves .”

The Kent Final will take place on Friday 28 June at the Medway Sports Complex.

Background

The Panathlon Challenge has been delivering Paralympic type sports events for over a decade in London and Liverpool and more recently through charity grants received from BBC Children in Need and St. James’s Place Foundation, have expanded into Kent.  This year the games promise to be enjoyed by even more participants and spectators than previously following the tremendous popular success of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.  Certificates and medals were awarded to all those who compete, regardless of ability.
