Girls’ Rugby Success!

Rugby is becoming an increasingly popular sport of choice for girls at The Malling School.

After a development year last year with only a handful of players, followed by lots of hard work from both staff and students, the Malling School Girls’ Rugby team have been proudly sponsored by the West Malling Lions. Generous donations from the local charity have provided tailor-made rugby shirts for the girls, which make them feel so proud to be a part of something new and somewhat controversial. Without the help and support of Chris Roberts and the Lions, none of this would have been possible.

The Malling School Girls’ Rugby teams took part in the Kent Rugby League Tournaments during March this year, representing years 7 to 9 in the full contact sport. After excellent performances from all of the girls, both teams were selected to represent Kent in the regional finals up in London.

Outstanding performances all round saw our year 7 team taking the top spot coming first and our year 9 team ranked at fourth in the whole of London and the South East. Our younger team went on to win every game and have been selected to represent the South East year 7 group in a national rugby league final to be hosted in Liverpool during May.

Key dates:
13th May – Rugby League National Finals

Star performers:
Alicia Webb – Captain of the younger team; didn’t miss a tackle, noticed for her fearless attitude and great defence as well as her sheer determination to score points

Mya Neagle – main points scorer, excellent attacking skills

Amy Foreman – Captain of the year 9 team; forceful tackler

Katie Middleton – great all round player, one of the key points scorers as well as making some great tackles

Karrianne Bell – incredibly fast running combined with her ability to side-step meant she was a key points scorer
