Maths

The essence of math is not to make simple things complicated but to make complicated things simple ”.

Stan Gudder

MANIPULATE

Mathematics allows us to understand how the entire universe works. It sheds illumination onto the most difficult of problems, our curriculum is designed to develop the skills needed to solve these problems. Mathematics allows us to progress and develop, and hopefully, to grow in knowledge, wisdom and self. Our curriculum has been designed to develop problem solving skills through manipulation and rearrangement of the problem into a more defined pattern or way of thinking, it allows us to change the structure to broaden the mind and enable understanding.

MASTER

The Malling School’s Mathematical Curriculum is founded on a mastery scheme of work, offering students logical reasoning and explanation, cross topical links, and inclusion of every student.  It is the aim that students will work through the curriculum, manipulating information and ideas to become masters of this subject.

MARVEL

It is the Mathematics aim to develop a sense of wonder, to question why the world is the way it is.  To broaden the pupils experience and capture their imagination.  We will also encourage questioning of understanding, to develop their conjecturing skills to test their own theories, to give the opportunity for experimentation with manipulating of situations, of numbers of letters.  To leave the lesson amazed at their own personal discoveries of maths in the world around them.

YEAR GROUPS

Year 7 - KS3

Introduction

The maths curriculum is based on a mastery approach which supports each pupil individually to learn at a speed which suits their skills.  The order of the curriculum is such that it ensures a true understanding of the basic skills before looking beyond these.  It is therefore delivered in a specific order and not within a time frame.  The order of which is outlined below.  Year 7 concentrates on all aspects of number as this is the KEY skill needed for all of mathematics.

Year 10 - KS4 - Exam board - edexcel

Introduction

This is the current year 10 SOW which moves away from the mastery SOW being delivered in KS3.  However, if does focus on Number and Algebra as these are the key elements of a maths curriculum and is delivered with a mastery approach and therefore all classes will move through this at a pace which suits them.

Some of the content is for the higher tier only.

Year 11 - KS4 - Exam board - edexcel

There is no SOW for year 11 as this is purely a revision year.  We use assessment information to prioritise class teaching and support the pupils with their independent study by providing them with detailed analysis of formative assessments.
